Compare savings accounts beyond the headline rate

A savings account comparison should begin with access, fees and deposit protection. The highest advertised yield is not automatically the best fit if the account requires a balance you cannot maintain or makes needed transfers inconvenient.

Understand the decision

Check whether the yield is introductory, variable or conditional. Read the minimum balance requirement, monthly fee schedule and transfer terms. Verify the actual bank receiving deposits, particularly when a financial app uses a banking partner. An app interface alone does not establish deposit-insurance coverage.

What to do next

  1. Compare the same balance and holding period.
  2. Read fees, eligibility conditions and withdrawal procedures.
  3. Verify the institution and ownership category for insurance.

Watch out for

A promotional rate may expire before your planned withdrawal date. Record when the terms change and compare the ongoing account rather than only the first month.

Are savings rates guaranteed?

Many savings rates are variable. Read the account agreement and avoid projecting today’s quoted rate indefinitely.
