Keep a simple household net-worth statement

Net worth is assets minus liabilities at a point in time. Tracking it can reveal progress that a checking balance misses, such as paying down principal. It is not the same as spendable cash or reliable income.

Understand the decision

Use consistent dates and reasonable values. Separate liquid assets from property and other hard-to-sell holdings. List debts at their outstanding balances, then keep monthly payments in a separate cash-flow view. This prevents a high net-worth figure from hiding a shortage of money for bills.

What to do next

  1. List assets and debts on the same date.
  2. Mark estimates and illiquid holdings clearly.
  3. Review periodically using the same categories.

Watch out for

Counting a home at full value without subtracting its mortgage overstates your ownership stake. Similarly, do not count a retirement account and its underlying fund positions twice.

How often should I update it?

Choose a schedule that supports decisions without encouraging reactions to every market movement. A consistent quarterly or annual review may be more useful than daily tracking.
