Credit utilization: understand the balance-to-limit ratio

Credit utilization compares revolving balances with available revolving credit. It is a useful measure of how much of your credit line is in use, but it should not become a reason to carry interest-bearing debt.

Understand the decision

Calculate a card’s ratio by dividing its reported balance by its limit. Also look at the overall ratio across cards. Reported balances may differ from today’s online balance because of reporting dates. The CFPB advises paying balances in full each month to avoid finance charges when applicable.

What to do next

  1. Write down each card’s balance and limit.
  2. Track both individual and combined ratios.
  3. Budget for payments without sacrificing essential bills.

Watch out for

Opening new accounts solely to adjust a ratio can introduce fees, inquiries and spending temptation. A mathematical improvement does not automatically mean the overall decision helps you.

Do I need to pay interest to build credit?

No. Carrying an interest-bearing balance is not necessary merely to demonstrate responsible account use.
