Debt avalanche or snowball: choose a plan you can sustain
Two common debt strategies organize extra payments differently. The avalanche targets the highest interest rate first; the snowball targets the smallest balance first. Both require maintaining the required payments on the other accounts.
Understand the decision
An avalanche generally reduces interest cost under comparable fixed-rate assumptions. A snowball can provide an earlier completed account, which some people find motivating. Before choosing either, identify past-due obligations, secured debts and promotional terms that may need special attention. A simple ranking does not capture every consequence.
What to do next
- List balances, rates, minimums and due dates.
- Choose one target for extra payments.
- Roll the freed payment into the next target after payoff.
Watch out for
If you keep adding new charges, the repayment plan can stall even while payments rise. Build a spending plan that prevents recurring expenses from returning to the cards.
What if minimum payments are unaffordable?
Contact creditors and consider a reputable nonprofit credit counselor. A ranking strategy alone will not solve an unmanageable required-payment total.
