Estimate the cost of credit-card interest
A card balance can become expensive even when a monthly minimum looks manageable. A rough interest estimate helps put the cost in dollars, while the card agreement and statements explain the exact calculation.
Understand the decision
A simple monthly approximation is balance × annual rate ÷ 12. Actual card charges may use daily balances and different rates for different transaction types. Purchases, cash advances and promotional transfers can carry different terms. A grace period may depend on paying eligible statement balances in full.
What to do next
- Find the applicable rate on your statement.
- Separate purchase, transfer and cash-advance balances.
- Use the statement’s payoff information for a more specific picture.
Watch out for
A low minimum payment is not a low total cost. It can stretch repayment because relatively little of the payment reduces principal.
Is the rough estimate an exact bill calculation?
No. It is a planning approximation. Your agreement, daily balances, payment dates and fees determine the actual charge.
