Dispute a credit-report error with a clear paper trail

An effective dispute identifies exactly what is wrong and includes evidence. Vague complaints make it harder to understand whether the issue is an incorrect balance, an account that is not yours or a payment recorded incorrectly.

Understand the decision

The CFPB recommends disputing errors with the reporting company and the business that supplied the information. Explain the correction requested, attach copies of supporting records and retain the submission and response. If the account may involve identity theft, use the official IdentityTheft.gov recovery process.

What to do next

  1. Mark the disputed entry and describe the error.
  2. Send copies of relevant evidence through a verified channel.
  3. Save dates and review the investigation response.

Watch out for

Accurate negative information is different from inaccurate information. Be cautious about services promising to remove any unfavorable record, regardless of whether it is correct.

Should I mail original documents?

Keep originals. Use copies unless a verified official process specifically requires otherwise, and retain your own complete file.
